Islamic Relief student meets First Lady of Afghanistan

Fatima, a high achieving student taking part in one of Islamic Relief’s literacy programmes, recently met Afghanistan’s First Lady. As well as sharing her learning achievements, Fatima also read some parts of her book to an audience including the First Lady.

Fatima, who is 45 years old and lives with her family in a remote area of Yakawlang district of Bamyan province, followed her dreams of reading and writing by being one of the first women in her village to enrol in Islamic Relief’s literacy classes. Fatima is part of the ‘Home Based Education for Women in Afghanistan’ Project which supports 6500 women for two years and is funded by IRUSA.

The First Lady commended Fatima and Islamic Relief for its effective women empowerment projects.

Fatima said: “I never could imagine that one day I would read and write and even go to the presidential palace and meet with the First Lady and governor of the province, but it happened through the education that I gained through literacy classes established by Islamic Relief in our area.
