Since then, we have expanded our programmes to include education, health, livelihoods, as well as water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH). We also support vulnerable children through our orphan sponsorship scheme.
During the famine of 2011, we delivered emergency aid to over 228,000 people through a USD $25 million programme – which was supported by donors including UN OCHA, UNICEF, and CAFOD.
In 2013, a far-reaching project drilled and repaired scores of boreholes and installed water systems in settlements for displaced people. Our work in the camps of Somalia includes preventing the spread of disease in cleanup and hygiene campaigns, as well as installing latrines benefitting 57,000 families.
We have helped more than 30,000 children to attend school and introduced Child Friendly Spaces, which are providing basic education to displaced children. In 2014, we completed the construction of a teachers training institute and a national eye hospital. We have also built health centres which are providing essential services to displaced people and malnourished children.
Our current focus is on delivering humanitarian and development projects in the South Central, Somaliland and Puntland regions. Our country office is in Mogadishu, with other field offices in Garowe and Hargeisa. Islamic Relief Somalia is linked to our East Africa regional hub.
